Naked Body of Dreams

From fingerpaint innocence
Arises affection in pastels,
Patient sketches in chalk,
The colored pencil study.
Hands forego tints and paper,
Paper eager for runny watercolors,
In favor of the easel.
Stretched canvas like bedsheets,
Made for brushes and strokes,
Offers position and composition.
Figures, poses, and nudes.
No oils. No commitment.
Only their simple arrangement,
And fingerpaints.

About the Poem

This poem uses the language of painting to describe the art of lovemaking. Certainly the two are kinds of communication and exchange.

This poem was originally published in Naked Body of Dreams (1985, Talisman Creations).
